Finer Clay

If the natural tendencies of mankind are so bad that it is not safe to permit people to be free, how is it that the tendencies of these organizers are always good? Do not the legislators and their appointed agents also belong to the human race? Or do they believe that they themselves are made of a finer clay than the rest of mankind?

160 years ago, a man with a brain was politely trying to show us that our reverence for government was misplaced. Politeness is the mark of a great mind. I used to read with only one thought in mind: Is this true? Now I also gauge how polite the words are. I discount snarling prose, because the snarl implies, “How dare you disagree with me!”
