Auntie Em!

A massive tornado, caught on video by a news camera on a tower, barreled through the city[Tuscaloosa] late Wednesday afternoon, leveling it.

The insanity of shoddy structures is not just a deep-south, tornado-alley thing. Every damn day, everywhere on this planet, Nature shows us that shacks made of sticks don’t hold up very well. I have a real problem with people who build flimsy shit and then wring their hands over how powerless they are against nature. Hint: Use concrete and rebar to make a strong structure, then cover with earth.

Retainer Wall

It’s hard to get the whole wall in one shot. Click to embiggen. The sack-n-patch is done. Now I just have to wire-brush the rusting steel strips, paint, and backfill. The pile of scrap lumber (hidden by the tree) is spoken for. A friend of mine will use it next winter in his wood-burning stove.

I’m planning on putting colored gravel in the center section. I’m not really looking for any more yardwork, like ground-cover plants, bushes, or more trees. But before that gets done, I need to run some conduit to the Astro-Table and run some water lines, valves, and a timer, to automate the irrigation of the trees.

Quirkiness

Tyranny is always and everywhere the same, while freedom is always various. The well and truly enslaved are dependable; we know what they will say and think and do. The free are quirky. Tyrannies may be overt and violent or covert and insidious, but they all require the same thing, a subject population in which the power of thought is occluded and the power of deed brought low.

 Richard Mitchell

Freedom cannot be organized because it is “always various.” Only tyranny can be organized. We call it “government.”

As a carpenter, I work with some very talented people. Some of these talented tradesmen have crippling personal problems that keep them from towering achievement–substance abuse, marital strife, poor money-handling skills, etc… If you claim to love freedom, you’re going to have to tolerate behavior you consider abhorrent.

Finer Clay

If the natural tendencies of mankind are so bad that it is not safe to permit people to be free, how is it that the tendencies of these organizers are always good? Do not the legislators and their appointed agents also belong to the human race? Or do they believe that they themselves are made of a finer clay than the rest of mankind?

Frederick Bastiat

160 years ago, a man with a brain was politely trying to show us that our reverence for government was misplaced. Politeness is the mark of a great mind. I used to read with only one thought in mind: Is this true? Now I also gauge how polite the words are. I discount snarling prose, because the snarl implies, “How dare you disagree with me!”

Winning!

“Now that our economic recovery is gaining strength, Democrats and Republicans must come together and restore the fiscal responsibility that served us so well in the 1990s,” the president said in a speech at George Washington University. “We have to live within our means, reduce our deficit, and get back on a path that will allow us to pay down our debt. And we have to do it in a way that protects the recovery, and protects the investments we need to grow, create jobs and win the future.”

“We have to live within our means…” Translation: You lazy, fucking peasants had better start coughing up some cash!

“…fiscal responsibility…” Translation: We need another bubble to generate some theft taxes.

“…served us so well in the 1990’s… But HomeBoy, how would you know? In 1990, weren’t you still in Kenya?

“…recovery is gaining strength…” Translation: Banks are rakin’ in the cash!¬†Halliburton too!

Pouring And Stripping

I stripped the first wall pour today. A few voids, but those are easy to sack and patch. Can’t wait to get this baby painted and backfilled.

This morning’s pour. This is the upper end of the retainer wall. 8-1/2 cubic yards of concrete.

Here’s the Astro Table, which I stripped Wednesday. I’ll have to dig a 70′ conduit trench before I can hook up the electrical. I’ll probably paint it same color as the house.

A Country With Laws

This is more like a crime gang’s behaviour than a country with laws.

Ai’s older sister, Gao Ge

Huh? A country with laws?
